About this equipment

One of three identical dredgers built by Bucyrus.(the others were Paraiso and Gamboa, both delivered in 1914) for the USACE for the Panama Canal, ordered after a visit to the works of president Roosevelt in 1906.

On the site of the USACE it is mentioned that she was built in Portland - Oregon, but no confirmation on this.

She was in service untill 1976, when she was bought by Panama to retire in Gamboa. After an earthqake in 1986 she was brought back into service for 71 days to clear the canal in the first period of emerency dredging.

A group of enthousiasts wanted to buy and preserve the last dredger that was involved in the construction of the initial canal, but cosidering the high costs, the plan was abandoned and since then she is slowly deteriorating in a corner of Gamboa port.
