Howden Brothers was originally a firm of coal importers based In Larne (Ireland) that operated a fleet of 20+ cargo steamers early 20th century. John Kelly Ltd. took over Howdens in 1952,

In 1919 they ordered a grab hopper dredger for maintenance of their yard in Larne with Olderfleet Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Larne. Because of some disputed paragraphes in the contract, the order was cancelled in 1921, so the vessel never worked for the Howden Brothers company.
