The company was established in 1907 and it is the larger enterprise in Bulgaria in both volume of production and ship’s sizes, technology and organization. Over the years the shipyard has been named “Varna port workshop”, “Georgi Dimitrov Shipyard”, “Varna Shipyard” and nowadays – “Bulyard Shipbuilding Industry”. The first product line was building and repair of small wooden cargo vessels. “Galata” was the first steel ship built in 1937 followed by a period of fast growing production of different types of vessels. The present profile of the Company was established in the period 1955-1980 with the implementation of major shipbuilding facilities. Modernization of production plants and further introduction of sophisticated know-how and technologies facilitated the construction of vessels up to 100 000 dwt.
The new building program stopped in 1999 and resumed in August 2005. Since 2004 the shipyard is owned by Bulyard Shipbuilding Industry ЕAD.
